Also known as the Fusus leopard gecko, this is a distinct species native to the forested and rocky regions of northern India and Nepal. Unlike the commonly kept Eublepharis macularius, it features darker, earthy tones ranging from brown to black, often with subtle banding or mottling. Its stockier build, shorter limbs, and broader head give it a robust appearance.
This species is shy and reclusive, with a more nocturnal nature. It thrives in cooler, humid environments compared to the arid conditions preferred by E. macularius, making its care requirements unique. Due to its shy nature, this species does not particularly like to be handled and has an amusing tendency to “scream” frequently when you touch them in their attempts to ward you off. Defensive as they can be, they are not usually biters.
The West Indian Leopard Geckois rare in the reptile hobby, prized by advanced keepers for its unique traits and limited availability. As a separate species, it does not hybridize with E. macularius, preserving its genetic integrity. Its rarity and distinct features, combined with its conservation importance due to habitat loss in the wild, make it a special and valuable species for enthusiasts.
