Remarks: The Red Breasted Chanchito has been in the aquarium hobby since the late 1890s and can tolerate a wide range of water temperatures and hardness. In fact, some report they were the first cichlids to be kept in personal aquariums. When in the right conditions and upon maturity, they develop red coloring starting at the base of the pectoral fins and running towards their anal fin. Red Breasted Chanchitos are typically peaceful unless in a cramped space or when spawning. This temperament combined with their decent size makes them an excellent candidate for an American cichlid community tank. The original parents of these fish were caught in Uruguay years ago and have been bred in our facility ever since.
