An abundant medium-growing crab species found in the shallow seabed of the middle Miocene Monterey Formation, Pea Crabs of the genusPinnixalived in what is now modern-day California approximately 12-16 million years ago. Beautifully preserved on slabs of flat shale, the crab fossil’s color can vary from brown to gold depending on what minerals were present at time of fossilization. These unique fossil specimens show excellent articulation and detail of each body segment.
